Boise, Idaho, welcomed a new education center, Philip E. Batt Education Building, this October. Named in honor of former Idaho Governor Phil Batt for his contribution to human rights in the state, the building houses offices for Wassmuth Center for Human Rights, along with a classroom, meeting space, catering kitchen, research library, exhibitions room, gift shop and a human rights-themed art gallery showcasing works from Idaho artists. Here, visitors can explore immersive experiences, including a virtual reality tour of Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and an A.I.-powered interactive display featuring Holocaust survivors’ stories.

The new building is adjacent to Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial, a commemorative site and reflection space along the Boise River Greenbelt that pays tribute to Anne Frank. The memorial is the only one in the United States and was constructed to inspire education, discussion and action regarding human rights issues, and features excerpts from Frank’s diary alongside inspirational quotes from global human rights leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Eleanor Roosevelt; Cesar Chavez; and Nelson Mandela. Open 24/7 year-round, the memorial is free for visitors and comes with a complimentary self-guided tour.
Also in Boise, celebrate the wonders of the season at Winter Garden aGlow, a magical event Wednesday–Sunday, Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve. Guests walk through a mesmerizing world of twinkling lights, enchanting displays, and the sweet aroma of nightly cookies and hot chocolate. Kids can explore this Winter Wonderland, while adults enjoy moments by the fire pits and sip holiday drinks at Snow Globe Bar.

Every year, hundreds of American Bald Eagles visit Lake Coeur d’Alene on their annual migration. Visitors can experience a special two-hour Eagle Watching Cruise on beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene, offering a unique opportunity to experience nature’s finest spectacle in the fall and winter months, November–January.
At Lake Coeur d’Alene Holiday Light Show, you won’t want to miss the annual Lighting Ceremony on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Locals and visitors experience the magic when a switch is flipped and more than 1.5 million Christmas lights go on, joining the most magnificent fireworks display in the Pacific Northwest. Another attraction at the Holiday Light Show are the “North Pole” cruises, popular with families. Holiday activities begin Nov 29, and typically extend to the first couple of days after Jan. 1.

A winter visit to Idaho is not complete without participating in an outdoor activity, usually in icy or snowy terrain. There are many skiing areas in the state, but only one Perrine Coulee Falls. Located near the town of Twin Falls in southern Idaho, the water flow is stronger in summer, but during late fall and throughout winter, the real attractions are many icicles lining the canyon walls alongside the 200-foot waterfall.
Most visitors view the falls from below, but some continue on to Canyon Rim Trail for a completely different perspective of the waterfall, canyon and Perrine Bridge. There are various methods to access Canyon Rim Trail, and some hotels nearby, but the area is not urbanized. Visitors can park along the side of the road on the way to or from Centennial Waterfront Park and walk to the falls, being careful of any snow or ice along the side of the road. Perrine Coulee Falls is definitely a memorable four-season experience.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
