London’s Design Museum has fully moved from its previous Shad Thames address into its impressive new digs in the city’s Kensington neighborhood. The soaring galleries occupy a space directly off Kensington High Street, previously home to the Commonwealth Institute. Reimagined by a design team under the direction of John Pawson, the building offers nearly triple the exhibition space of the museum’s former Thames-side location. Along with a permanent and constantly evolving collection of temporary exhibits including the fascinating behind-the-scenes tale of “Ferrari: Under the Skin,” the new space includes the Swarovski Foundation Centre for Learning, and the Bakala Auditorium with seating for 202 people.

On the upper floor, the Designer Maker User exhibit is a permanent presentation of objects illustrating contemporary design through architecture and useable items such as typewriters, lamps and familiar household objects. There’s also a breathtaking collection of chairs spanning various art and architectural movements. The museum offers an ongoing Designers in Residence program exploring a specific theme. Upcoming temporary exhibitions include “Hope to Nope: Graphics and Politics 2008–18” (March 28–Aug. 12), with examples of the role of graphic design and technology in political campaigns and movements around the world; “Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier,” (May 10–Oct. 7), looking at Alaïa’s transformation from sculptor to couturier; and “LOEWE Craft Prize 2018,” (May 4–June 17) celebrating excellence in modern craftsmanship.
