Delta Air Lines announced its fleet modernization with the retirement of the remaining Douglas DC-9 aircraft and the delivery of new fuel-efficient aircraft. “The DC-9 has been a workhouse in our domestic fleet while providing a reliable customer experience,” said Nat Pieper, vice president of fleet strategy, Delta Air Lines. “The aircraft’s retirement paves the way for newer, more efficient aircraft.” Delta retired more than 350 planes from its fleet since 2008, including 50-seat CRJ-200s, Saab 340s and DC-9s, and replaced the aircraft with new economically-efficient aircraft such as the Boeing 777-200LR and variants of the 737 and 717. The DC-9 retirement follows the recent delivery of Delta’s new Boeing 717-200 aircraft and Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, which entered service in October and November, respectively. Each aircraft is equipped with first-class, premium-economy and economy cabins as well as WiFi connectivity and in-seat power outlets. Delta also announced a new order for 40 Airbus aircraft, including 30 narrow-body A321s, which will begin delivery in 2016.
