Delta Air Lines announced last month that its projected revenue for the second quarter was not as expected, putting its projections for growth and profits in doubt for this year. Most major airlines in the United States joined Delta in expecting the passenger revenue per seat mile figure to drop in the second quarter. Delta originally projected that, at worst, that figure would drop by 4.5 percent; instead, Delta’s PRASM dropped by five percent. That said, airline executives, analysts and Delta’s president Glen Hauenstein are now saying the markets are going to improve from here. For consumers, low numbers mean capacity might be shrinking to be more in line with lower demand. Fewer flights may be available on certain routes or airlines may drop entire routes altogether; those both remain to be seen. For now, low revenue numbers might be good for travelers looking to catch a break on fares — lower prices are expected to stick around for a while longer before inching back up as airlines decrease their capacity. Nothing is happening too quickly, and any upcoming changes are expected to be incremental.
