It’s time for chocolate, coffee, music and honey in Hawai’i. From May 13–14, the fifth annual Big Island Chocolate Festival will get underway — and this year’s theme is Lavalicious — A Chocolate Salute to the 100th Birthday of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Events, based at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, include a college culinary competition, chocolate body painting, a volcano constructed from chocolate, plenty of food booths, seminars on food and agriculture and an indoor-outdoor gala with treats created by the island’s top chefs, chocolatiers and confectioners. Later, tour the Big Island Bees beekeeping museum and tasting room for a beekeeper-led tour of live, working hives and samples of local organic honey.

From May 13–22, the eighth annual Kau Coffee Festival showcases the island’s rural Kau district’s coffee production with an all-day hoolaulea celebration with food, music, hula, food, farm tours, mill visits and a guided coffee tasting tour at Kau Coffee Experience. The epicenter for the May 21 hoolaulea is the Pahala Community Center. Additional events include the new Kau Coffee Lobsterpalooza. Later, on June 4, the Big Island Jazz & Blues Festival will fill the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel with music and live performances by Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning musicians from the islands and around the world.
