The shoreline of the United Arab Emirates is a major draw for international tourists, but new warnings regarding appropriate beachwear may cast a shadow on fun in the sun.
Signs posted recently in Ras Al Khaimah, the U.A.E.’s northernmost emirate, warn tourists to cover up on public beaches or face a fine. The warnings, a response to complaints by local residents, are directed at beach-goers who wear swimsuits deemed too revealing in a country where conservative dress is the norm; it’s still common for local women to don a coverall abaya for beach outings.
Ras Al Khaimah is located 60 miles northeast of Dubai where bikinis are still considered beach-appropriate attire. Bikinis are also still allowed on beaches in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah.
