Resembling large-scale wood and glass pods rising from lakeside slopes in Canha, Portugal, the hotel Herdade do Moinho Novo offers seclusion and serenity just 35 minutes from the bustle of Lisbon. Each of the eight air-conditioned, individually decorated chalets features a fully equipped kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom and living area, plus a balcony overlooking the surrounding countryside.

The design was by Semgaffes Arquitectos Associados, Lda., with a forest-themed interior décor created by the owner. Each chalet accommodates up to two adults and two children. For fun, there’s cycling, hiking, kayaking and horseback riding. There’s also a golf course about a half hour’s drive from the property — or you can simply stay put and relax in the lakeside pool. The property is located within farmland with resident herds of horses, cows and ostriches. Children can enjoy the experience of helping to feed and care for the farm animals or digging in the vegetable and herb gardens.
