Contemporary Art Lands In Gorky Park

Daily

Occupying space once home to the iconic 1968 Vremena Goda (Seasons of the Year) Soviet Modernist restaurant in Gorky Park – a preservation project undertaken by architect Rem Koolhaas — Russia’s first archival collection of Russian contemporary art dating from 1950–present is now on display. Dubbed the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the museum was founded in 2008 with a collection assembled by fashion designer, publisher and art collector Dasha Zhukova. The museum space also houses a research center and archive, along with a bookstore and café.

Through Feb. 7, 2016, an exhibition of paintings, drawings and large-scale sculptures by Louise Bourgeois titled Structures of Existence: The Cells explores the artist’s seven-decade body of work, including the giant bronze Maman and other pieces from her well-known series of spider sculptures. Bourgeois pioneered what has come to be known as environmental installation, dating to her solo show in 1949 at New York’s Peridot Gallery. Ongoing educational programs at Garage include lectures, workshops, reading groups and creative writing courses.

Review: Prestige Oceanfront Resort

Vancouver Island gets progressively wilder as you leave Victoria behind and follow the coastline west. By the time you reach Sooke, about 45 minutes from the provincial capital, city blocks have surrendered to forests, rocky shoreline, sheltered coves and long views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Prestige Oceanfront Resort rises directly above Sooke Harbour, where boats move across the basin, and the Olympic Mountains form the horizon beyond the strait.
