China Demands Travel Payment Flexibility, Fewer Cards

When it comes to paying for travel, what do Chinese travellers really want? Worldpay asked survey respondents about their habits versus interests and the industry payment options they’d like to see. When it comes to booking a flight, many younger travellers in every country are looking for alternative modes of payment. However, this is especially true over an even more varied array of age groups in China. The country’s youngest travellers, ages 18–25, use Alipay over credit cards when booking a flight online every time. The preference shifts a little through middle age, when we see a high spike in credit card usage among those ages 56–65. The most common card brand? UnionPay. However, after travellers age past 66, forms of payment switch again, with elderly travellers always using Alipay over credit cards to pay for flights. The reason for these ups and downs may relate to the types of travel users are booking, with Worldpay pointing to the fact many legacy carriers only accept credit card payments. Younger travellers may book more affordable carriers, which are newer to the market and therefore accept alternative modes of payment, while more established and older travellers look for premium and internationally known travel brands like the credit card-only legacy carriers. Also taken into consideration is the amount of card coverage in any given country; while card coverage in the United States and Australia is high, it’s much lower in China and India. Regardless, when given the choice between two forms of payment, all Chinese travellers choose Alipay. Chinese travellers differ from other travellers in regards to airfare payment in another way. When asked if they would prefer to pay for airfare in monthly or regular installments, Chinese travellers gave a resounding positive answer, contrasting greatly with travellers from the western half of the world. Worldpay asked respondents similar questions regarding payment for vacation packages. While Alipay took the top spot for travellers 25 and under, all other age groups resoundingly use credit cards to pay for vacation packages, especially those over 66, who exclusively use credit cards. Again, though, if given the option to use Alipay, many would like to and are also open to paying for vacation packages in regular installments. The survey was conducted with 2,000 respondents in six countries.
