There’s never been a better time to visit Vienna. As the city’s motto states, it’s now or never. I recently had the chance to learn about the future of the city at a Vienna-themed lunch at Philadelphia’s Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse.
Here’s a highlight of things to look forward to in Vienna:
- 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of painter Gustav Klimt’s birth. Klimt changed the Vienna art scene in the early 1900s, and to celebrate, 800 of Klimt’s works will be on display in the city.
- Through June 17, the Vienna Festival presents stage and dance performances and attracts world-class musicians.
- The Danube Island Festival, June 22–24, is 600 hours of music.
- In November, City Hall Square transforms for the Magic of Advent. The Christmas Markets are a must-see.
In addition, the wonderful old standbys of Vienna are thriving. Between stops at world-famous cafés around the city, stop at the MuseumsQuartier, one of the leading art complexes in the world. Music plays non-stop throughout the city, and the nightlife offers something for every type of traveler. Design is big in Vienna, and new buildings and hotels are opening this year and in the next few years in the Austrian city. Ride the Giant Ferris Wheel, a popular Vienna landmark at Prater amusement park. The city’s ambassadors, the Vienna Boys’ Choir, can be seen every Sunday at Hofburg Chapel. And, that’s just the tip of the sachertorte.
