I am always perfectly content to do nothing while at my sister’s house on Paw Paw Lake in Michigan. One thing that does interest me enough to venture out is the annual Public Art display in nearby St. Joseph. This year, May 15–Sept. 15, downtown St. Joe has been taken over by 20 giant tub toys painted by local artists. These giant, colorful duckies, frogs and whales decorate the streets and delight the residents and visitors. Past years’ creations included cars, carousel horses, sailboats and other fun things. People pose for pictures with them, debate which is the best and guess what next year’s theme will be. There are other fun things in the area, including Tabor Hill Winery in nearby Buchanan. It is the fourth-largest and fourth-oldest winery in Michigan. It is also the only Michigan winery with a full restaurant. After a little bit of wine-tasting, we love to relax for dinner with a view of the vineyard and the sunset. The perfect dessert is a cupcake, and we found the perfect cupcake at Mimi’s in St. Joseph. I started with the red velvet, but plan on working my way through their 40 or so different flavors. This will be a delicious journey. No trip to the area would be complete without devouring a pizza at Silver Beach Pizza. Opened in 2005 with the dream of serving ice-cold schooners, Silver Beach also created the best pizza in the area. St. Joseph is about 90 minutes from Chicago, and Chicagoans flock there all summer.
