Upper Deck Golf at Wrigley Field

by John Wroblewski

Growing up, my friends and I dreamt of playing in Wrigley Field. Last Saturday that dream came true, sort of. While most of the golf world was focused on The Masters Tournament, several hundred amateur golfers played a nine-hole course inside the Friendly Confines.

Upper Deck Golf is a unique chance to play golf inside stadiums across the country. Attendees can bring their own clubs (sand wedge through 8 iron), but I opted for the provided PXG products, including the brand-new PXG 0311, Black Ops, Wildcat irons and Sugar Daddy wedges.

Golfers get PXG Xtreme Tour golf balls to use for the round. If you’re a “duffer” like me (or even if you’re not), they also offer mulligans for sale (or free with the VIP/Premium packages). Adding to the fun are LED Birdie Rings. Score a birdie and light up the field (and brag to your friends).Upper Deck Golf

When I entered Wrigley Field early Saturday morning, it was a chilly 38 degrees. A short while later as I prepared my first shot, it was a much warmer 55 degrees. Unfortunately, my golf game never heated up.Upper Deck Golf

The nine sets of tees located throughout the stands allow for interesting shots and views. Like regular golf, sinking the drive is a hole-in-one. In Upper Deck Golf, landing within the inner circle is a birdie, on the designated green is a par and off the green is a bogie. Fortunately, for me, you can’t shoot worse than a bogie.Upper Deck Golf

Other fun activities included a long-drive competition; a chipping challenge; and the new Faldo Challenge, simulated target shooting. There was also creative merchandise featuring a Cubbie Bear holding a golf club instead of the usual baseball bat.Upper Deck Golf

After Chicago, Upper Deck Golf goes to Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The rest of the venue list includes Michigan Stadium, Fenway Park, Dodger Stadium and many more.
