A few weeks ago, I went on a roadtrip to Tennessee to visit my brother. Naturally, it would be unsafe to make the 12-hour trip without stopping, so we made a pitstop at two separate Marriott hotels, one in Hagerstown, Md. on the way there and another in Knoxville on our return from the weekend away. The latter was a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, the former a SpringHill Suites. Though they had many similarities, the higher price point of the SpringHill Suites in Hagerstown was well-justified. The lobby had ample space to work, and the continental breakfast was excellent by hotel standards. The shower in the suite we stayed in was equipped with full-size bottles of Paul Mitchell products, which truly made a difference at the start of a long day on the road. By contrast, the no-frills approach of the Fairfield Inn & Suites was standard fare. Rather than opting for the luxury of the SpringHill Suites, the Knoxville Fairfield Inn & Suites gave us a comfortable place to rest our heads on the way out of town. This accommodation, too, provided a breakfast, though not quite to the standard of SpringHill Suites. Overall, the difference in quality between the SpringHill Suites and Fairfield Inn & Suites is certainly worth spending a few extra dollars on the nicer lodging.
