Every day during our two-week vacation in Italy, I woke up before everyone else and snuck out to go for a run. Exploring on my own is such a therapeutic experience and an amazing way for me to see a unique side of my surroundings. Before other tourists woke up and crowded the streets, and all of the speeding Italian cars began zipping by, I was able to weave in and out of cobblestone alleys completely unbothered by civilization. On one of my runs through Sorrento, I came to a conclusion: Italian people don’t run. Not only do they not run, but they also don’t seem to like seeing people run. When the natives eventually woke up and caught me in the act, I received so many “what-is-she-doing?” looks I lost track. I started up a steep hill for some variety, away from the stares, and wound up with the best view of the entire city. There weren’t any shops or restaurants on that side of town, so we never would have made it over there during our stay. I could see everything from one edge of town to the next, with an epic sunrise just getting started. Running back to my hotel, I was so excited to start the day and get back to everyone when I saw another runner. As he started up the hill I was just going down, I saw he was smiling hugely and waving, and I almost didn’t notice the GoPro strapped to his head. I was caught on film, so clearly I’m sure, giving that man the “what-is-he-doing?” look I saw way too many times on my own run. Tourists! — Angelique Platas, assistant marketing and sales coordinator
