Last year my sister, brother-in-law Scott and I saw Ringo Starr at Chicago Theatre.  Somewhat surprisingly, Scott enjoyed it so much, he bought tickets for Starr’s return concert earlier this month.

Former Beatle Starr formed Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 1989. Featuring a shifting lineup, it has included many great musicians. The lineup for Chicago’s performancd had Colin Hay of Men at Work, Hamish Stuart and Steve Lukather of Average White Band and Warren Ham of Toto. Starr started the concert with “Honey Don’t,” an oldie from the Beatles, and followed it with “It Don’t Come Easy,” one of his solo hits. Starr turned the mic over to the others for a few of their hits. Except for a short tea break backstage, Starr was very active on stage, drumming, singing and even doing jumping jacks. That’s impressive for anyone, especially an 85-year-old.

By the time the band finished the last song, “With a Little Help From My Friends,” everyone was standing, cheering and singing along. A few people were even crying.

The concert didn’t use many visual effects or other such frivolities. It was simply long-time master musicians jamming for two hours, and it was amazing.

Built in 1921, the Chicago Theatre is a landmark theatre in the heart of downtown Chicago. It is both grand and modern, making it a magnificent venue. Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band sold all 3,600 seats.

Prior to the concert we dined at The Village, a family-owned and -operated restaurant serving fine Italian food for almost a century. It is part of Italian Village, four restaurants in one location. My Chicken Marsala was fantastic. Jean enjoyed eggplant Parmesan, while Scott had a big salad accompanied by a couple meatballs. The challenge here is not to fill up on the delicious Italian bread.
