A few weeks ago, I had the chance to fly premium economy for the first time. After working at Global Traveler for two and a half years and reading and writing about premium economy, I was eager to try the service. I was flying transcontinental, Philadelphia (PHL) to Los Angeles (LAX), and I upgraded my United economy ticket to an Economy Plus seat for $54. I was flying out at 6:30 a.m., so the money was definitely well spent. The plane was not full, but people were cramped into economy, so I breathed a sigh of relief when I realized I had the row all to myself. As it was the crack of dawn, I was looking to catch a quick nap on board because once in L.A., it was hit the ground running. Luckily, in premium economy, the armrests go up, so I was really able to stretch out and relax comfortably (Don’t worry, I wouldn’t put my feet on the seats!). Food service was not complimentary in premium economy, and other costs apply, much like economy cabins on most domestic carriers. However, overhead space was dedicated, so there was much less of a struggle for room and storage — another definite perk. My return flight to Philadelphia was a red-eye, so once again I decided to upgrade in the hopes of getting some rest. On another note, it was almost impossible to say “no” to an upgrade either time; both times I logged on to check in, only middle seats were available. I just couldn’t pass up an aisle premium economy seat for a middle economy seat! My flight home was decidedly more crowded, but, somehow, I got lucky. My row was the only one on the entire plane without a middle seat passenger! While I could not sprawl out as much as I had before, I was still able to catch a few hours of sleep comfortably. I have never flown premium economy internationally, but due to my positive experience with United’s Economy Plus, I would definitely consider traveling premium economy more often. In fact, I look forward to it! Kim Krol, eFlyer editor, circulation and public relations executive
