The past few weeks I’ve found myself drawn to golf. Not necessarily in an intense way like many others might, but more in the sense of getting outside, enjoying the fresh air and open greens and hitting balls. My friend’s mom had a set of golf clubs she no longer used, so she lent them to me.

After acquiring her clubs, my friend and I went to Blue Sky Golf Club, a public course and driving range. We each got a basket of golf balls and took to the driving range. While my friend is far better than me, given he has golfed often at actual 18-hole courses, it was still fun to get out and practice, as he was able to give me good tips and tell me about each club and their purposes.

So far, I’ve learned golf can easily be something one overthinks. Getting obsessed with every aspect of my form can be so consuming, I actually swing horribly. We laughed at the range because we would then say, “I don’t even care, it’s just hitting a ball,” and not even think of anything before swinging again, this time hitting the ball perfectly and watching it arc through the air in a straight line.

I enjoy using the 7 iron, the 3 wood, sand wedge and (occasionally) the driver. I say this about the driver because on one swing I will feel confident and hit it far, and the next, even if I feel I’m hitting it exactly the same way, it slices right and I wonder how no one got hit.
