With Pope Francis visiting Philadelphia in about a month, papal mania is beginning to sweep the City of Brotherly Love in a variety of ways. The local dollar store near my place is selling T-shirts, mugs and tote bags featuring various images of Pope Francis, and even retailers at Philadelphia International Airport are cashing in and selling items commemorating the visit. Even some of my favorite breweries in the area are selling liturgical libations celebrating the pontiff’s visit, including brews like You Only Pope Once from Cape May Brewing Co., Holy Wooder from Philadelphia Brewing Co. and Papal Pleasure from Manayunk Brewing Co. The city has been planning for months for the Pope’s visit on Sept. 26–27, with the number of visitors expected to reach about 1.5 million, including those attending the World Meeting of Families beginning four days before the Pope’s arrival. In addition to ensuring a safe environment, Philadelphia is aiming to making visitors feel welcome from the moment they arrive in the airport, with top-notch hospitality from staffers offered a refresher course in customer service, the addition of Vietnamese and Polish translation services and assistance from World Meeting of Families volunteers outside security. Though I’m not excited for traffic delays and road closures, I’m interested in seeing how the city handles the increase in visitors and manages the event and am enjoying all the divinely inspired memorabilia commemorating the visit.
