Petra, an old, archaeological city in southern Jordan, is known as Rose City after its famous stone-cut architecture built into the red sandstone of the desert. Recently named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Petra was established as early as 312 BC, and is one of the most historic sites still standing.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site has existed since prehistoric times, making remaining temples and immense structures carved into rock all the more fascinating. It sits between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea and served as an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria. It was a trading center for incense, silk and spices.
Some of the main sites of the popular tourist destination include the Siq, or the main entrance leading to the city of Petra; The Treasury, a 40-meter-high structure carved into stone; and the theater, an auditorium that once sat 4,000 people carved into the sand.
The Petra Museum contains 280 artifacts and five exhibition halls for guests to explore the rich history of the site. Over the years, more has been uncovered about Petra and its Nabatean inhabitants through excavations and research.
For a mind-blowing experience, many recommend visiting the site by night. Thousands of candles line the Siq and Treasury while dancers and singers perform, casting shadows on the red rocks surrounding them, making for a magical experience.

Jun 3, 2026Leopard Sands River Lodge Review
Getting to and from Leopard Sands River Lodge in Kruger National Park is half the fun, as it is a short, scenic drive from tiny Skukuza Airport (possibly one of the most attractive and mellow in existence) and main entrance of Kruger National Park, which turns 100 in 2026. Having evolved into a well-oiled machine since its December 2023 opening, it presents its first “wow” moment 30 minutes before even setting foot on the property. As baggage is brought in from the plane, drivers from the lodge set out a selection of beer; soft drinks; and locally produced dried fruit, nut mixes and biltong (the South African cousin to jerky). It’s a small sample of what’s to come.
