One Tuesday in October 2007, I traveled to Yardley, Pa., to meet with my prospective new bosses. I was nervous, as I had only been on one other interview in the last 12 years, and that had turned out to be a job much like the job I was planning to leave. It was a large company, filled with small cubicles. It’s the kind of place where you’re surrounded by people but you feel completely isolated because everybody is just too busy to chat. And you never even meet your bosses because, to them, you’re only known as employee #22246. But on this day, I was interviewing for the position of art director for a “small†magazine, one not owned by a huge corporation. (Not that you’d know it by looking at the magazine.) And it was a relatively new magazine, just over three years old. When I sat down, I expected to immediately be grilled about my achievements and my biggest flaws. Or to be asked about how I created two magazines for the newspaper I worked for and how I managed my workload. But, to my surprise, before a single question was asked, I was told the history of Global Traveler magazine — how it started and how quickly it had grown. Both Fran, the publisher and CEO, and Lisa, the editor in chief, just beamed with pride when talking about the magazine. I could tell they LOVED this magazine and it was like their baby. They laughed about some lessons learned the hard way and they bickered like siblings over who was the stubborn one (they both are). And I knew this was the kind of company I wanted to be involved with. So, here I am, now a part of the GT family, celebrating the fifth anniversary of this wonderful magazine. I know with the dedication of everyone who is a part of the GT team, this magazine will continue to grow and get even better over the next five years and beyond. And I’m so happy to be a part of it. – Tracey Cullen, art director
