Neighborhood Gem

by Katie Skrzek

Apr 21, 2022

In past blogs I’ve written about one of my favorite restaurants in my neighborhood, June BYOB. The classic French restaurant opened in Collingswood, New Jersey, in August 2021. My husband and I dined there for the first time shortly after the restaurant opened, and it quickly became our favorite spot on the block. The restaurant changes its menu often to reflect the best seasonal offerings while staying true to classic French dishes.

June BYOB June BYOBWe visited June BYOB this past weekend to sample their spring menu. We dined with the same couple who accompanied us on our first visit to June. We decided to share each of the four appetizers (Chilean sea bass crudo, frog legs, escargot, and chicken and mushroom agnolotti) and order our own entrées. I opted for the grilled halibut with fava beans and sunchoke. We’ve experienced nothing but excellent meals during our past visits, and this time was no exception. The appetizers each offered something wildly different. The crudo was light and refreshing, the frog legs were rich and herby, the escargot was perfectly prepared, and the simple agnolotti was surprisingly my favorite. My halibut entrée was also excellent, with the flavorful accompaniments and the perfectly grilled fish.

This repeat trip to our favorite neighborhood gem will certainly not be our last.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
