A future GTee will be the TPC Jasna Polana golf course in Princeton, N.J. Jasna Polana means “bright meadows” in Polish and was so named by J. Seward Johnson’s third wife, Barbara Piasecka Johnson. She was Johnson’s chambermaid and ended up as the 149th richest person in the world with a net worth of $2.9 billion. Interesting story to say the least!
Today, the estate she named has been turned into a Tournament Players Club (TPC) golf course with a very hefty greens/cart fee of $260 per round. The course was designed by South African Gary Player and has taken in the beautiful and hilly landscape with the addition of scenic water features.
The greens were like lightning on the beautiful fall day that my foursome hit the links. The game included Rick Irwin of Clifford Paper, Tim Ogden of Brown Printing and Bob Hancock of Sands Capital Management.
I spent the night at one of Jasna Polana’s houses on the course that overlooked the 16th green and hole number one’s fairway. I was there to attend the Lane/Axelrod wedding. Mark Lane worked on the Finnair account many years ago, and we have remained friends, playing golf regularly. Mark Lane and I had traveled a few times to Finland for golf tournaments, so it was fitting to honor his wedding with a round of golf as he jetted off for his honeymoon in Spain.
If you get the chance, Jasna Polana is a great course to play with a very interesting history!
