We all have our bad days. That’s a fact. I don’t normally think it is a good idea to rank your misery against another person’s, but I just had to write about this story. I was having one of those days over the weekend; nothing terrible going on, but just a case of the little things continuing to add up. I had to get to Penn Station, so I opted to take the subway. Yes, folks, for all of those who know me for traveling in first or business class, I happily take the subway when needed. So I was transferring from the N train to the 1 train at Times Square. I got to the platform just as a train was pulling away. Another tiny annoyance in the day. Then, I look down and see — I kid you not — a foot-long rat, head to tail. I quickly diverted my attention across the platform and spotted a guy holding his probably 10-pound dog in one hand and his BlackBerry in the other. I watched as he lost his balance for a minute, knowing one of those two things was going to drop. He saved the dog, but the phone went right onto the train tracks — just as the train pulled up. There was no hope of recovery. I thought to myself, I’m very glad the man didn’t fall on the tracks, or the dog for that matter, but no small annoyance in my day could compare to the rest of this guy’s day.
