To celebrate my birthday last month, my boyfriend, David, and I decided to do something a little bit different.

Instead of grabbing dinner or seeing a show, we made the hike to Longwood Gardens, an expansive botanical gardens in southern Pennsylvania. Approximately an hour and half from us, the gardens were a perfect way to celebrate the day.

For history buffs like us, Longwood Gardens offers an interesting dose of history regarding the Du Pont family, historical owners of the estate. The Du Pont house features many aspects of their lives which have now grown to explain the story of Longwood Gardens. In addition, the Indoor Conservatory is a sight to see, boasting rare, beautiful plant species.

This greenhouse uses a zone heating technique to keep plants at the optimum temperature year-round. The scenery makes for the perfect backdrop to special events, a nice family outing or just a normal photo-op. While the array of indoor specimens are beautiful, the outdoor displays are a sight to see as well.

Between the gorgeous fountain display and intricate mazes, it would be nearly impossible to fully relish all of the sights in a single visit. Although this was David’s first visit, I have been there many times before with my family.

It did, however, look very different due to the time of year. Typically, I visit Longwood Gardens during the winter months, when its holiday celebration is in full swing. A late spring visit was a change of pace, but the lull in crowds and beautiful floral arrangements outside were surely no disappointment.

Overall, our visit to Longwood Gardens was pleasant, despite the rainy, grey skies. The history and beautiful flowers combined to make the perfect birthday.
