My trips to visit my sister and brother-in-law in Bonita Springs, Florida, always feature excellent food. My latest trip was one of the best.
Our first stop occurred on the way from the airport. At Oak & Stone, craft beers and artisan pizzas are the stars. Pizzas are stone-fired with their handcrafted dough, made with triple-filtered water and a 356-hour fermentation. I chose the Clucker, consisting of roasted chicken, spinach, goat cheese, pine nuts and mozzarella under a garlic Parmesan sauce with a balsamic syrup drizzle. The flavor layers and textures made this a real delight. There also is the largest self-serve bar wall in the area, with 40 to 60 taps of rotating craft beers.
The next night we went to see a Beatles cover band at The Stage. Grilled on a cedar plank, the salmon was lightly glazed with honey, brown sugar and butter. Despite that sounding very sweet, the glaze added a subtle trio of flavors. The meal came with a small Key lime pie, which was the perfect balance of tart and sweet.
The great food continued at Off the Hook Comedy Club. Having been there previously, I knew the chicken Alfredo flatbread was a winner. With sautéed spinach, an Asiago and Parmesan cheese sauce and plenty of grilled chicken, it was perfectly cooked to a golden brown.
We made one stop for a refreshing beverage at Stan’s Idle Hour overlooking Goodland Bay. Their strawberry frozen margarita was perfect for the blazing afternoon sun.
Looking for a great fish place by the water, we found one in the little fishing village of Goodland. For more than 45 years, Little Bar Goodland has specialized in fresh fish while offering beautiful views of Goodland Bay. We started with a large order of plump, juicy calamari. My mahi mahi featured five lightly breaded pieces.
On our last night, we dined at Island House. Their grilled chicken pizza was among the best I have ever eaten. It was so good, I wanted to keep eating it even when I was full. The leftovers were happily devoured as a later night snack.
Lastly, I must mention the homemade drinks created by my favorite mixologist. Whether a strawberry mango frozen margarita, strawberry banana colada or any other cocktail, Scott served them cold, creamy and very delicious.

Apr 18, 2025Wellness Comes Naturally in Greenville, South Carolina
Strolling through downtown Greenville, South Carolina, it’s easy to see why the city ranks high among the best places to live in the United States: Shops, restaurants and coffee bars line the streets; there are also performance venues, hotels and outdoor plazas. But what really sets this upstate city of just more than 78,000 residents apart are the easily accessible parks and walking trails encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city by foot or cycle (both handcycles and adaptive bikes are available to rent). Even better, as Greenville continues to grow, city planners and major employers work together to expand these opportunities. When Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail, for instance, opened in 2009, the paved, multiuse pathway ran about 9 miles from the heart of Greenville to the town of Traveler’s Rest.

Apr 16, 2025Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review
Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.
