It’s not unusual for me to take the short walk to Sketchbook Brewing Company for for music, trivia or simple relaxation with excellent local brews. Last Saturday, Alley Chats Micro Con was a new experience.

Presented by Southgate Media Group, the event featured several comic writers and artists displaying, selling, signing and discussing their work. Among the creators were Art Baltazar and Scott Beaderstadt, two long-time favorites of mine.

Art owns Aw Yeah Comics, a fun comic book store blocks from my home. Aw Yeah is like an old-school comic book store with a funky twist. It’s a fun neighborhood hangout spot. Art discussed his three-book Yahgz series, as well as his two Dr. Seuss graphic novels.

Scott had several of his creations. He also discussed his Kickstarter campaign for his latest creative project. On April 1, Scott launched Death My Life and Love on Kickstarter.

I also checked out the works of creators I had not previously met: Emily Kardamis, Bill Reinhold, Molly Kasch, George Gant and The Kao. A micro con like this allowed more time to chat with each creator in a more relaxed atmosphere as compared to the usual chaos of a bigger comic con. I hope Alley Chats Micro Con returns to Sketchbook Brewing Company.

Another highlight of this convention was the food. Not your typical con food, Cousins Maine Lobster was on the menu, along with Sketchbook’s large beverage menu. After several minutes trying to decide, I finally opted for a Connecticut roll … Maine lobster served warm with lemon butter on a New England roll; it was delicious. An Orange Door IPA was the perfect accompaniment. Dry-hopped twice, it blends citrus and piney aromas.

As I sipped my Orange Door IPA, I enjoyed watching the creators interact with attendees. I also scanned the menu for new beverages. When I finished, I made one last round to Art and Scott before I departed. It was the perfect way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon.
