I know, it’s tacky to include smokers in the list of minorities that are discriminated against. There’s a huge difference between who people are, and what people do, so these days choosing to smoke is pretty much like wearing a “kick me” sign. That said, as a smoker I really appreciate it when the effort to accommodate is made. Which is why I was over the moon to find the Aviator’s Club at Denver’s Jeppesen Terminal. When pointed toward the “smoking area,” I was geared up to find a chilly outdoor patio, or a smoke-filled box. Instead, it was a bar! With windows and everything. Big room, good ventilation, glass walls overlooking the tarmac, lots of power points. You have to buy at least one drink to use it, but you can even keep your receipt, leave, and come back without having to buy another drink. The fact is, people do smoke. So–state laws allowing–doesn’t it make sense at airports to have a place inside security, so that when we have long layovers we’re not clogging up security lines by having to exit the airport to smoke and then come back in? Do you really want a nicotine-deprived fidgeter next to you on a long flight? I’m just saying….:-) –Mary Hunt, editor, eFlyer
