The Chicago Stars FC is scuffling through a tough season, but it’s still a great time at their games. Last week I saw a thrilling 3–2 victory over Racing Louisville.

Debuting in 2006, Chicago Red Stars were a founding member of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. Since 2013 the team has played in the National Women’s Soccer League, rebranding as Chicago Stars FC for the 2025 season.

After a few other stadiums served as home for the Stars, the team moved in 2026 to the new Martin Stadium on Lake Michigan in Evanston. Built in 1997, Martin Stadium has undergone a few renovations, increasing the capacity to 12,000. Located on the lakeside campus of Northwestern University, the stadium features incredible views. On a clear day, Chicago’s skyline is visible from the walking path adjacent to the east side. The path is also a wonderful place for a few moments of peace and tranquility watching the lake.

With gates opening 90 minutes before the game, of course I was there to soak in every moment and aspect of the full game-day experience. One of my favorite things is watching an empty stadium come alive as fans arrive. Hundreds of other fans were just as early, flooding the gates the moment they opened.

I slowly made my way around the stadium to the fan zone. Located at the south end of the stadium, the fan zone is a huge area full of all sorts of entertainment. In addition to concessions and a merchandise tent, there is a deejay, an inflatable mini-field and more, including several games like bags and Connect 4. Stars mascot Supernova is also there, taking photos and having fun with all fans, even the big, old fans like me.

As the game neared its start, I headed to the north end for the team entrances. It was cool seeing all the young fans cheering for the players.

Chicago scored first, as Jameese Joseph scored at the 24-minute mark. Mallory Swanson had the assist for her first of the season. The first half ended with Chicago still leading 1–0, but Louisville scored just four minutes into the second half to tie the score. Swanson netted her first goal of the season, assisted by Michelle Alozie, at the 62-minute mark to regain the lead. Louisville tied it again six minutes later, setting up an exciting end. With seven minutes left in regulation, Julia Grosso, with an assist from Nadia Gomes, put Chicago on top for good, bringing the crowd to its feet. The rest of the game saw the Stars firmly defending the lead.

Statistically, the Stars held possession 56 percent of the game but were outshot 22–12. The Stars made the most of their shots, though, tying Louisville with six shots on goal. With no yellow or red cards given, it was a very clean game. This was such a great display of the beauty of soccer.

After spending the first half in the press box, I watched the second half from several other spots. I like getting views of the action from all angles. There is not a bad seat in the stadium. Every seat offered great sight lines and seemed so close to the action.

Since this exciting win, the Stars suffered one loss. They are currently in last place with 16 points, just four behind Boston Legacy. The Stars have eight more games, ending the season in Washington, D.C., against the Washington Spirit on November 1. I already have tickets for the game against Denver, my niece’s home town team. On a side note, I have never seen the Stars lose. I think I need to attend more games.

The team already announced it will return to Martin Stadium for the 2027 season. The 2027 season starts in February. I look forward to several more games next season.
