Celebrating Patriotism

Jul 4, 2018

Since I have the privilege of writing a blog for July 4, I decided to recall a great act of patriotism. Portions of this have previously appeared on Global Traveler‘s site, but it bears repeating.

On April 25, 1976, I watched my Chicago Cubs play the Los Angeles Dodgers. I watched hundreds of Cubs games in my young lifetime, but this one would be different. This one would be historic. In the middle of the game, two protesters jumped onto the field and attempted to burn the United States flag. Cubs’ outfielder Rick Monday raced in from his outfield spot and swooped up the gas-doused flag before it was lit. Instead of his baseball instincts kicking in, Monday’s patriotism guided him.

Over 35 years later, despite having an excellent playing career, Monday will always be known for this play, which was named one of the top 100 plays in baseball history. He modestly says, “At least I won’t have to answer the question of why didn’t you stop it.” I was fortunate enough to interview Monday for a GT blog about that moment. That blog was read by David Stein on Sporting News Radio, much to my delight. It can be heard at Rick Monday Saves the U.S. Flag.

While I was certainly proud to hear my words read by David Stein on nationwide radio, I was even prouder that it shone the light on Monday again. You don’t have to be a historical figure to be a patriot or to do your part. Patriotism comes in many forms from many sources, some of which might seem very unlikely. When Monday put on his Cubs uniform that day, he had no idea he would become a national hero. Every July 4th, I like to recall these events. I give thanks to Monday and all before and after him whose acts of patriotism helped shape this country.

Hotel Rochechouart Offers a Taste of 1920s Parisian Love and Art in Montmartre

Paris has lots of modern, newly built hotel towers, but it may be better to find a historic property, well cared for, a 5-minute walk to Quartier-Pigalle and with a view of Basilica of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre from your window. Walk around the 9th arrondissement, sample the bars and cafés, and make time for sleeping or kissing.
