Back to Milwaukee

A bunch of us spent the weekend in Milwaukee. Although it’s only 90 minutes from Chicago, we stayed at a friend’s house just outside of Milwaukee.

It was the last weekend for Summerfest. Having other things to do, we didn’t stay too long, but we saw an eclectic mix of music.

We saw “The Queen of Percussion,” Sheila E. Prince’s former drummer can also belt out great tunes.

Figuring we would never see a full Miley Cyrus concert, we checked out her set. I guess others had the same thought because, surprisingly, the crowd was older than expected.

We were intrigued by Beatallica, a mash-up band combining songs from the Beatles and Metallica. Their songs usually feature Beatles melodies, Metallica riffs, humor and a combination of both bands’ lyrics and original lyrics.

Sunday afternoon we donned our Cubs jerseys and cheered for our team as they beat the Brewers at beautiful American Family Field. We went all-Wisconsin, enjoying delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese curds. There weren’t many highlights for the Cubs this season, but this definitely made the list.

Since we were in Wisconsin, we decided to stay to watch the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. While we weren’t at the game, we had the full Wisconsin experience at a sports bar. We didn’t wear our Chicago Bears gear, though. It was odd, but fun, cheering for the Packers for once.

Chicago and Milwaukee have an interesting rivalry. I think it is more manufactured than organic. I always have a great time in Milwaukee, and I freely admit I will be cheering for the Brewers in the upcoming playoffs.

Hotel Nice Beau Rivage Review

In the city Henri Matisse once called home — and where Musée Matisse holds his largest collection — Hotel Beau Rivage has a special connection with the artist, who first visited the hotel in 1916 and painted famous sea views from his room 89 in 1917. Today, framed Matisse prints — many brightly colored cut-out collages from the artist’s JAZZ collection — decorate its walls. Hotel guests also benefit from a partnership with the museum.
