Rise and Shine: The Monica Abbott Story is the autobiography I wanted to see for many years. That wish came to fruition, as Monica’s book is finished and available for pre-order.
I first met the softball legend more than a decade ago, when Monica was in her third season with the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits. For three seasons I was fortunate to witness firsthand a truly elite athlete, not just one of the greatest softball pitchers ever. I was even more fortunate to get to know Monica, the person. Even after she moved on, I made sure to go to the ballpark every time Monica was in town with another pro team or Team USA.
Monica’s résumé is beyond impressive. She’s a two-time Olympic Silver Medalist and pitched the first perfect game in Olympic history. In the NPF she was 126–41 while pitching on five championship winners. She was equally impressive overseas, helping her teams to six Japan Softball League titles. Her name is in the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest pitch ever.
A list of achievements doesn’t tell Monica’s story, nor does it fill her book. Tenacious on the mound but a real softie off the field, Monica has a legion of fans affectionately known as “Moniacs.” Monica is always focused on growing the game and giving back.
One of the reasons I really wanted to see this book is the lack of coverage and exposure of women’s sports. Aside from being a proud Moniac, I am a big supporter of women’s sports. I had several short interviews with Monica over the years but only scratched the surface. There’s so much more to her story. Just as Monica helped grow softball, I hope this book leads to more books and coverage of women athletes.
Last week Monica announced the upcoming release of the book, along with her retirement. Immediately upon hearing the news, I contacted Monica requesting an interview. Despite being deluged with similar requests, Monica responded quickly and positively. That’s just Monica. My interview (found here) might be the first she did after her announcement.
As I stated in the interview, immediately after talking to Monica, I ordered the book. Now I anxiously await its arrival.
