A Year of Domestic Travel

Jan 6, 2016

Like most of my Global Traveler colleagues, I travel a lot. Unlike most of my GT colleagues, pretty much all of my travels are domestic. This year promises more of the same.

I always make many trips to Rockford, Ill., to watch the Rockford IceHogs. The IceHogs of today are the Chicago Blackhawks of tomorrow. Even on the overnight stays, I don’t really count the 50-mile trip as travel, though.

Already on my calendar are my annual trips to Novi, Mich., located just west of Detroit, and Indianapolis, Ind., for Comic-Con events. This year I am adding Madison, Wis., and St. Louis, Mo., to the list. These are all driving road trips.

In a few weeks, I will fly to Fort Myers, Fla., for a family vacation. Sometime in the spring, I will flying to New York for GT’s annual Wines on the Wing airline wine competition event. During the summer, I will fly with friends to an undetermined city for our 16th annual baseball trip; Seattle, Denver or Houston are the front-runners.

Over the last two years, I fell in love with the Chicago Bandits, a women’s professional softball team. This summer, I will take at least one road trip to Akron for a series of games with the Racers.

At some point in the year, a trip to Las Vegas for fun will take place, while another trip will take me to Columbus, Ohio, to visit cousins. This puts me at 10 trips already (not counting the IceHogs games). I am sure I will add a few more along the way. It’s a bit odd, though: The older I get, the more I travel and the more I like traveling. I won’t fight it; I’ll just go with it and go to more places. — John Wroblewski, online contributor

Viking Discovers Penguin Discovery

Cruising is always an adventure and, in addition to uncovering new culinary traditions and cultural experiences, lucky guests sometimes get to witness actual scientific discoveries. During a recent sailing of Viking Octantis to the waters of the Antarctic, Viking’s onboard expedition team participated in the discovery of a new colony of chinstrap penguins, identifiable partly by a distinctive facial marking that resembles a strap running beneath their beak from one side of their face to the other, as though holding down a hat.
