A Time to Remember

by Holly Godbey

Oct 7, 2011

Monday marks my five-year anniversary as an employee at Global Traveler. It is amazing how quickly time flies, as I can remember, in picture-perfect detail, my interview and my first day at the office. Today, it’s a new office with several new faces (some of whom I’ve helped interview), but the spirit of the magazine and the team remains committed to publishing a monthly magazine for you, our loyal readers and frequent travelers.

I’ll save you from a blog of me endlessly waxing nostalgic. I did, however, get into a conversation at an event recently that reminded me of the importance of what we do. I was at a cocktail reception for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, an organization I’ve been involved with since the spring. I began talking to one of the staff whose boyfriend travels frequently, flying out every Monday and Thursday. She began telling me how he loves the articles with the charts listing the details of airplane seats. I thought to myself, “Wow, all those months I spend compiling the information for our annual first- and business-class charts, it feels great knowing people are really utilizing the product.”

On another note, five years ago I began to use Apple products, as Fran Gallagher was, and is, a huge proponent of the company. It was a slow conversion, as I used two computers at first — my college laptop for most projects and a Mac for those that required use of our database. My PC suffered quite the fate as it flew out my car window into a pile of snow one icy February morning and I became a Mac user. And today? I can’t imagine ever using a PC again. I am on my third iPod. And as soon as my contract with Verizon allows for an upgrade, I’m getting an iPhone. Most of the work we do here at GT couldn’t be done without the limitless ingenuity of Steve Jobs. May he rest in peace.
