I was working this weekend at WHQ, completing my GTee review of the Mauna Kea Golf course for the next issue when the tragic news of Gabrielle Giffords came on TV.  I still am upset and saddened that something like this can happen to an obviously wonderful and dedicated person. Additionally, there were many other individuals (some associated with Giffords; others there just to meet her) who were seriously injured or killed. One was an inspiring 9-year-old girl named Christina Green. Christina wanted to meet Giffords as she represented everything she had hoped for in life.  She was related to Dallas Green, the Philadelphia Phillies manager who took them to their first World Series win in 1980. Possibly baseball was in her blood, as she was the only girl on her local little league team. Born on Sept. 9, 2001, a date of infamy to all and particularly to those in the travel industry, Christina first thought she was born on a holiday. That changed when she became older and learned the true meaning of the date. Christina said it was a day of hope.  She was a very patriotic girl, often wearing red, white and blue. Her college plans included attending Penn State University, where she aspired to become either a vet or a politician. Christina was there on Saturday to learn more about public service. She was a shining star, a wonderful young girl senselessly cut down as she was focusing herself on what she wanted to be.  Having two daughters myself and remembering when they were Christina’s age, out playing sports and discovering themselves, I just thought somehow we should try to remember the life of Christina Green.  She has many connections to us — Philadelphia Phillies, love of sports, animals, Penn State and a person who wanted to better her life and help others. — Fran Gallagher, publisher and CEO
