For a long time, many visitors to Berlin rated the city’s cuisine as not highly creative. But, in recent years, with its surge of excellent local chefs and highly praised international restaurants, Berlin has been a paradise for visitors who appreciate great food, unique restaurant design and uber friendly staff. Now, nine renowned top chefs and restaurant managers in Berlin reveal their favorite gastronomic locations in the city.

“Berlin has the most interesting restaurant scene in Germany,” said Burkhard Kieker, CEO, visitBerlin. “Together with some of Berlin’s most innovative chefs, managers and restaurant owners, we have become scouts for our guests. After all, eating well is now one of our visitors’ favorite pastimes.”
Favorite restaurants of Berlin’s top chefs range from trendy cafés and street food markets to international specialties and exceptional Michelin-starred dining. Sustainability plays a major role here: Many recommended restaurants use regional ingredients and efficiently produced food. The tips are not only presented on the visitBerlin.de website, but also on Instagram, where food influencers have tested the recommendations.

According to visitBerlin’s guest survey, the gastronomy scene makes the city an attractive destination — eating out is the second-most popular activity during a stay in the capital, just behind visiting sights and culture. Here are some of Berlin’s most well-known chefs, their restaurant and their personal recommended restaurant(s) for finding an excellent meal in their own city:
- Marco Müller (Rutz) recommends Goldies, as well as Trio and Bandol sur Mer in Mitte.
- Tim Raue (Restaurant Tim Raue) recommends Do De Li, Madame Ngo and Papaya in Charlottenburg.
- Micha Schäfer and Billy Wagner (Nobelhart & Schmutzig) recommend Annelies in Kreuzberg, Michelberger Restaurant in Friedrichshain, Café Akkurat in Kreuzberg and Pars in Charlottenburg.
- Michael Kempf (Facil) recommends Frühstück 3000 in Schöneberg and Kreuzberg, Otsuka, and tigertörtchen in Mitte.
- Sarah Hallmann (Hallmann & Klee) recommends La Maison in Kreuzberg, Mausi in Neukölln and Schwarzes Café in Charlottenburg.
- Fabian Fischer (Bricole) recommends Allan’s Breakfast Club & Wine Bar and Zum Schusterjungen in Prenzlauer Berg, Canal Berlin in Mitte, and Osteria Ribaltone in Schöneberg.
