TripAdvisor announced its World’s Best Destination list, part of its annual Traveler’s Choice Awards, and Bali, Indonesia, took the top spot, knocking London, the previous winner, to the No. 2 spot.
The destinations are chosen based on reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveller booking interest on TripAdvisor.
Island destinations were popular on this year’s list, with Phuket, Thailand, and Crete, Greece, ranking in the top 10, but Bali was the undeniable winner. From historic landmarks and beautiful coastlines to a vibrant nightlife and a variety of adventure and wellness activities, there is something for everyone in the Indonesian paradise.
Surfers and beach lovers can enjoy world-class waves; adventure travellers can take on Mount Batur and the island’s volcanic mountains; history lovers can explore a World War II ship, the U.S.S. Liberty, and religious sites such as the Uluwatu Temple; and wellness-focused travellers can venture to Ubud for its lush green rice paddies, yoga retreats, meditations and massages.
According to the Bali Provincial Tourism Service, the island nation has seen a steady increase from 2 million foreign visitors in 2008 to 4 million in 2015. From 2014 to 2015, there was a total increase of 6.2 per cent in international arrivals and an 11.7 per cent increase in domestic arrivals. Last year saw a tourism increase of nearly 18.9 per cent, marking significant growth to the destination.
Following Bali and London on the list of World’s Best Destinations were Paris; Rome; New York City; Crete, Greece; Barcelona, Siem Reap, Cambodia; Prague; and Phuket, Thailand.
