Downton Abbey fans take note: If you love classic English manor house splendor, add Arley Hall & Gardens to your list of travel destinations. Located in Cheshire in northeest England, the stunning estate has been home to members of the Ashbrook family since the 15th century. The present Hall, built in Jacobethan style between 1832 and 1845 on the site of the original 1469 structure, has appeared in numerous television and film productions including British television series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (ITV Granada). Rooms with original 19th-century furnishings and art include a grand Elizabethan staircase, a formal library, gallery, drawing room and The Emperor’s Room — named to commemorate its historic turn as the bedroom used by Napoleon III during the winter of 1847–1848. But don’t spend all your time inside. The expansive gardens have been recognized as some of the finest in existence throughout Britain and Europe. Features include the long, dense Herbaceous Border, believed to be the first of its type to be planted in England. There’s also an avenue of lime trees and beautiful Quercus Ilex evergreens. Along with the eight-acre formal garden, there’s a six-plus acre Woodland Walk, and The Grove, filled with pathways and sculptures including a herd of sheep woven of willow branches by artist Juliette Hamilton. Take a break from wandering to visit The Gardener’s Kitchen café for lunch or tea. Depending upon the time of year, travelers can schedule their visits to include a performance in the Walled Garden Theatre, watercolor workshops or even a personal greeting from the current Lord and Lady Ashbrook.
