Four of Vienna’s top museums are readying new exhibits for early 2014. At the Belvedere, it’s Wien – Berlin, detailing the contrasts, similarities and social links between the Secession movements in the cities of Berlin and Vienna, illustrated by works illustrating the psychological focus of Viennese expressionists and the passion of German artists. Works by Albert Paris Gütersloh, Otto Dix, Max Liebermann and Josef Hoffman are included.

At The Albertina, Birth of a World-Class Collection follows the timeline of the gallery’s collected works from the court of Maria Theresa through the Congress of Vienna. Archduchess Maria Christina and Duke Albert of Saxony-Teschen, who gathered art while living in Vienna, Dresden, Rome, Paris and Brussels, established the collection. Among the famous works is Albrecht Dürer’s Field Rabbit of 1502.

Also set to open are Schiele Rediscovered: An Artist and His Collector at the Leopold Museum in Museum Quartier, with paintings, sketches, photographs, letters and other handwritten documents; and Experiment Metropolis – 1873: Vienna and the World Exhibition at the Wien Museum, an exploration of the city’s robust period of growth, often referred to as Gründerzeit, which followed the removal of the old city walls.
