American travel interest in Cuba is on the decline, according to a report from Allianz Global Assistance. The report measures the percentage of Americans interested in planning a trip to Cuba.

This year, 2019, marks the 500^th birthday of Havana, and the city forecasts 5.1 million visitors from around the globe to celebrate the occasion — an occasion 90 percent of Americans don’t know about, according to the survey. Additionally, 6.8 percent of those aware of the celebrations remarked they are more likely to visit, while 2 percent said it will make them less likely to visit.

In terms of overall percentages, those likely or somewhat likely to actually plan a trip to Cuba decreased since travel to the island reopened in 2017. In 2017, those likely to visit the island numbered about 5 percent of respondents. Travelers somewhat likely to visit dropped from 19 percent to 12 percent.

In the study, Allianz explains the steady decrease in interest may be due to confusing travel restrictions that act as a potent put-off for travelers who might otherwise consider a trip to the island. The survey indicates more than 60 percent of U.S.-based travelers do not understand the current travel restrictions.

“Our survey indicates that Cuba scores highly for its resorts and beaches, as well as its cultural attractions, with 34 percent of Americans listing one of these as the top reason for their interest in visiting the island,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications, Allianz Global Assistance, USA.
