If you’re looking at a long layover through Miami International Airport, head over to the South Terminal to check out the newest addition to its Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Program. WAYPOINT, a 110-inch video wall showcases short films and video art, including documentary films about the emerging and established artists who created the works.

WAYPOINT co-developers and contemporary art filmmakers Wet Heat Project produced the exhibition’s first two programs. “Miami Artists at Work” features South Florida artists Pablo Cano, Robert Chambers, Edourd Duval Carrié, Lynne Golob Gelfman, Gavin Perry, Ralph Provisero, TM Sisters, Jen Stark, Mette Tommerup, Frances Trombly and Michael Vasquez, who were all filmed while working in their studios during impromptu visits between 2008 and 2011.

The second project, “Making Their Mark,” features two short films detailing the painstaking work by New World School of the Arts students to produce large-scale public art projects.

“WAYPOINT adds an exciting new dimension to our fine arts program at MIA by giving travelers a glimpse into how artists create work,” said Yolanda Sánchez, Ph.D., director, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division. “It’s like an open window into the making of contemporary art, and future programs will feature site-specific video artwork.”

The WAYPOINT gallery is located near MIA’s Gate J-7.
