Hotels around the world developed a standard of service and amenity offerings for business travelers, but private home rental giant Airbnb is playing catch-up. While Airbnb is a strong competitor when it comes to rental availability and price, it often comes up short in regards to service and consistency — perhaps unsurprising considering its business model, but despite the challenges, it’s not giving up on the target industry.

One challenge business travel planners face when considering Airbnb as an option for employee accommodations is security. A company is responsible for the safety of its employees while on the road, and there are liability concerns when it comes to booking through an individual as opposed to a large hotel company. However, Airbnb does require a profile picture and verified phone number and email, and it functions heavily on reviews with special designations awarded publicly for the highest quality properties.

All Airbnb listings include details of offerings like WiFi, laundry services, amenities, bathroom and dining essentials, nearby conveniences, parking, public transportation information and more.

The company also devotes special attention to business travelers by distinguishing properties offering particularly responsive hosts, 24-hour support, 24-hour check-in, laptop-friendly workspaces and more. Additionally, the company recently launched a booking service specifically for business travel planners allowing for tracking of nights booked, costs and trip dates in a customizable dashboard. An employee can also book him/herself and select “This is a business trip” upon booking to allow the company and travel partners to access itinerary details.

Having already established itself as one of the most popular accommodation options for leisure travel, Airbnb will likely continue to refine its business travel offerings, but only time will tell if it’ll rise to the hotel playing field.
