A Tiny Colorado Town Celebrates A Frozen Dead Guy

Jan 31, 2015
Daily / Exclusive

In the world of bizarre spring festivals, Frozen Dead Guy Days may win the gold. The annual festival, which takes place in the tiny, Colorado mountain town of Nederland about an hour from Denver, honors former resident Bredo Morstoel. Morstoel was cryogenically frozen, brought to Nederland in 1993 by his grandson, Trygve Bauge, and stored in garden shed that Bauge intended to turn into a cryogenics facility. Morstoel’s unorthodox presence in the town was “grandfathered” in to local ordinances, allowing him to stay after his grandson was deported back to Norway. The ensuing festival has garnered worldwide media coverage.

This year’s dates are March 7–9. Events include the Amazing Live Music Showcase, coffin racing, costume polar plunging, frozen T-shirt contests, ice turkey bowling, brain freeze contests, a parade of hearses, frozen salmon tossing, readings by the Frozen Dead Poet Society and theatrical performances by Wu Shu. Opening night, a Frozen Zombie Procession begins in the center of the tiny town’s single roundabout and heads to the Blue Ball for live music and dancing. Several screenings of two award-winning short films, Grandpa’s in the Tuff Shed and Grandpa’s Still in the Tuff Shed, take place throughout the weekend.

Fairfield by Marriott Phnom Penh Review

Phnom Penh as we imagined it stretches beneath us: a picturesque, low-rise mix of Southeast Asian and French Colonial styles. When the inhabitants of those buildings look back at us here in the Fairfield by Marriott hotel in Chip Mong Tower, they see the future.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
