InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, on Chicago’s famed shopping avenue, recently announced its biggest renovation yet, poised to be completed by June.
“In many ways we are waking a sleeping giant,” said Chris Cawley, general manager, InterContinental Magnificent Mile. “This has always been an exceptional property in so many ways, and our stunning, newly refreshed Grand Tower guest rooms will be the final finishing touch.”

With its 477 guestrooms, the hotel’s Grand Tower will debut a full transformation blending its Moorish-influenced roots and modern luxury. Its new look found inspiration in the building’s former life as Medinah Athletic Club, with design studio KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group creating a Mediterranean mix of Moorish, Greek, Turkish, Persian and Celtic designs. The ornate architecture completed in 1929 boasts three large relief carvings in the ancient Assyrian style. Updated amenities include reimagined minibars, remote working setups and full-length armoires replacing the typical hotel room closet space.
“We cannot wait to share the latest chapter of the hotel’s story with our guests, clients, and team,” said Alexandra LaLoggia, director of sales and marketing, InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile. “InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile has so much to offer: beautifully restored 1920s event spaces, a spa featuring a junior-size Olympic swimming pool, a world-renowned steakhouse, and now, a brand-new look to our Grand Tower that will rival the city’s best accommodations.”

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
