A recent story on Global Traveler‘s website reported sports travel is expected to increase over previous years. I saw this story just as my friends and I finalized our trip to Washington, D.C., to see the Nationals on our 19th annual baseball trip, just one of my many sports-related trips.

Every year, sports is a huge part of my travel. This year I’ve already traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for Marquette women’s basketball; Rockford, Illinois, for IceHogs hockey; Madison, Wisconsin, for University of Wisconsin women’s softball; and Fort Myers, Florida, for Spring Training baseball.
In addition to the annual baseball trip, I have several other sports trips planned. I’m going to Columbus, Ohio, for Ohio State football; Cleveland, Ohio, for a women’s pro softball series between the Chicago Bandits and the Cleveland Comets; Las Vegas, Nevada, to see a Golden Knights hockey game; and an undetermined location for a Northwestern Wildcats away game. That’s nine total sports trips, and there’s always the possibility of adding more.
Although all feature sports, friendships are really the focal point. Some of those friends are with the sports organizations, some accompany me, some live in the destination city, and others meet me wherever. I cannot count the number of sports and teams that have been the backdrop for great times with friends. I don’t necessarily remember scores, but I have wonderful memories of moments with friends.

During “the Golden Age of Air Travel,” in the 1950s and ’60s, getting aboard an airplane was a special occasion, with passengers wearing their best outfits to suit the exclusive setting and lavish dining. This changed during the 1970s and into the 1980s, when commercial air travel became more democratized, thanks in part to the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and luxury was contained within business- and first-class cabins. In the last 30 years, as discount carriers found their audience, more shifts took place in major carriers’ premium cabins and lounges.
