Left to Our Own Devices

by Stephanie Makowski

Aug 5, 2018

There is little evidence to dismiss the statement, “We are constantly connected.” The use of cellphones and computers established a 24/7 line of communication that never turns off. As I travel for work and leisure, the constant stream of connections is all around me, but it never seems as apparent as when I visit New York City.

I was in the city the other day meeting with clients, and as I traveled by train, bus and on foot throughout the city, I was presented with the same image: connections without communication. Let me say that I appreciate my cellphone’s and computer’s capabilities to connect me with my family and friends, co-workers, etc. I feel, though, we may often fail to communicate effectively off of a device, making the social connections all around diminish.

The city illuminates this due to the massive crowds of people together at any corner. I often wonder if this failure to say hello or smile at the person on the train is a safety precaution or is the beginning of the end of physically present communication/connectivity?

Here are a few suggested steps to re-connect with others outside of the devices we have:

Take in your surroundings. This is not only safe but also engages you with new places and space! You may see something or someone that gives you a new outlook.

If you take the time to be polite and briefly say hello or acknowledge the other person next to you, you may have more impact than you think. Studies have shown there are quite a few people in the world who feel insignificant, even though they could be in a crowded city like NYC. Taking a moment to smile or relate is important. It is a good practice to build others up.
Beyond the discussion of others, take at least a half an hour out of your day to re-connect with yourself. Disconnecting to have some time with your own thoughts is critical to successfully self-communicate, address your present mood and feelings and recharge to more effectively — you guessed it — reconnect with those around you.

The new ways in which we are all connected have many benefits to business and to maintaining long-distance relationships with family and friends, but as we go about our busy lives, let’s all remember to take a step back, put the devices away and reconnect. One day, you may even have one of those “movie moments” or a story to tell that you experienced, rather than reading about it after the fact.

By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience

I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
