There’s plenty to commemorate in Britain during 2016, starting with the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Numerous related events are planned, including an immersive theatrical experience at the Royal Shakespeare Company and new exhibitions in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Next up is the 150th anniversary of beloved author Beatrix Potter’s birth. Explore the landscape that provided inspiration for The Tale of Peter Rabbit and other books in the Lake District of Cumbria in northwest England. The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere simulates locations from the stories, including Peter Rabbit’s garden, Mr. Tod’s underground home and the woodland glade that was home to Jemima Puddleduck.
There’s also a birthday celebration for Capability Brown, the remarkable landscape artist responsible for more than 170 stunning English gardens, who will have been born 300 years ago in 2016. Some of his more notable contributions include the gardens at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.
2016 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of novelist and poet Charlotte Brontë, the eldest of the famed Brontë sisters and author of Jane Eyre. The Brontë Parsonage Museum located in Haworth, Yorkshire (once the Brontë family home), celebrates the Brontë’s legacy. Details and cast for the film The Brontës will be released April 21, 2016.
