As a guest of the Taipei Economic and Culture Office, I was given an inside view at what government and large corporations are doing in Taiwan to empower women. In the past decade or so there has been an amazing shift in cultural norms; women are forgoing early marriages to earn college degrees, aiming for higher work positions and becoming entrepreneurs. During my trip I met with multiple government officials (mostly men but a few women) who wanted to showcase their stats on work programs, gender equality in the work place and improvement for the pregnant work force. Although it was difficult to get actual program names and statistics on how many women executives are in Taiwan government and corporations, the overall emphasis on gender equality was great to see. The face-to-face meetings with these government officials and women journalists painted an interesting picture in the cultural landscape currently in motion. The laws are decades ahead of the traditions; women are often choosing higher education and executive positions while forgoing having children or getting married altogether. Although this is not 100 percent true in every case; most women believed their husbands would want them to stay at home after marriage, with the men wanting to be the sole breadwinner. But women are taking charge in Taiwan, leading fulfilling lives as educated and successful businesswomen. I found many parallels to how women still feel in the United States today and am looking forward to seeing both Taiwanese and U.S. women have it all: a career and family as the norm.
