Preferred Rooftop Destinations

by Carrie Cox

Mar 28, 2025

Over the past six months I didn’t need AI to highlight a photo trend on my phone … it was easy to tell I’ve been visiting a variety of rooftop destinations and taking pics at every turn. Today I thought I’d highlight three of my favorites (in no particular order):

THE UNION LEAGUE CLUB, NEW YORK CITY
Thanks to Publisher and CEO Francis X. Gallagher, a normal NYC night turned into a delightful evening on the Rooftop of the Union League of New York. We originally met at the indoor bar for drinks before a fellow traveler mentioned the rooftop had a full menu. We walked upstairs, decided to stay, and dined until dusk fell into evening. Besides the incredible view and excellent food, I remembered thinking the rooftop was large enough for Bert, Mary and a few Chimney Sweeps to dash in yelling, “Step in Time!” just as the sun went down. In my opinion, it’s one of the best hideaways New York has to offer — and the bread pudding was fantastic!roof top

SAGE, SARASOTA
Ironically, I was standing on the rooftop at The Westin in downtown Sarasota when I spotted the rooftop at Sage. I’d been contemplating a dinner reservation at Sage, but I had no idea the entire restaurant was a Sarasota landmark and nearly 100 years old (added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984). Although the restaurant itself is a nod to old-world charm, the Sage rooftop offers a full bar, lounge, firepit and live music on Friday nights. An easy place to unwind after a long week or grab a drink before filling other items on your dance card, Sage has its own vibe worth noting and a pair of Instagram-able angel wings worth visiting. I’m looking forward to the day when I can order some small bites or dessert alongside the beverage of my choice.roof top

WHITE LIMOZEEN, NASHVILLE
For those who’ve seen the Dolly Parton tribute atop The Graduate Hotel by Hilton Nashville, you’ll never forget the pink paradise you find inside White Limozeen. I snagged a reservation last summer, and it was one of the best solo evenings I can recently remember. The décor is memorable, the drinks are fun, the servers were attentive, and the atmosphere is electric. I know Nashville has a million places you can people-watch, but this was my chance to pretend I was a pretty pink princess and soak in the situation around me. Displaying the best black and white rooftop floor, you’ll also love the pink fringe umbrellas, funky furniture and backyard pool in this sunny side stop.roof top

Stay tuned for future travels from the high-rises of your favorite city. Who knows what else I may find on my phone?

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
