As of Jan. 31, more than 1,000 U.S. flights were canceled across the country in the wake of an arctic cold front spanning central Texas to the East Coast. Additionally, states including Minnesota and Wisconsin face weather advisories, with some warnings potentially affecting air travel over the next few days as the storm moves.

In addition to the more than 1,000 canceled flights, more than 1,800 U.S. flights were delayed, according to FlightAware. Airports including LaGuardia Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport issued ground stops due to weather, with about 40 percent of DFW’s schedule canceled.

American Airlines enacted the most cancellations, stopping nearly 420 flights Jan. 31. As a result, the airline announced it will waive change fees for travelers scheduled to fly through Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport through Feb. 2. Passengers must rebook by Feb. 2 for travel by Feb. 8.

Delta Air Lines allows travelers planning to travel Feb. 1 to rebook for flights on or before Feb. 4 without paying fare difference or change fees where applicable. The waiver applies to cities including Austin, Texas; Cincinnati, Ohio; Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas; Lexington, Kentucky; Memphis, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Other airlines enacting changes in response to the storm are JetBlue, Southwest, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines. Updates regarding flight schedule changes and other news relating to the storm can be found on their official websites, including winter weather waivers.

Airports as far west as Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International and Colorado’s Denver International also experience delays as a result of the storm.

Flights and airports aren’t the only ones facing problems from the storm; the icy weather makes for dangerous driving conditions, with up to half an inch of ice or sleet expected in many parts of Texas. According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, about 15 states anticipate ice accumulation in the next few days.

Travelers venturing through these states by road are advised to have food, water and a flashlight in their vehicles in case of emergency. The National Weather Service also urges travelers to slow down and use extreme caution, especially when approaching bridges and overpasses.

These warnings remain in effect until Feb. 2 at the earliest. Stay up to date on the storm via the National Weather Service.

Hotel Nice Beau Rivage Review

In the city Henri Matisse once called home — and where Musée Matisse holds his largest collection — Hotel Beau Rivage has a special connection with the artist, who first visited the hotel in 1916 and painted famous sea views from his room 89 in 1917. Today, framed Matisse prints — many brightly colored cut-out collages from the artist’s JAZZ collection — decorate its walls. Hotel guests also benefit from a partnership with the museum.
