At the invitation of my friend Jodie I attended a special lunch with former pro boxer Fres Oquendo. The “Lunch with a Legend” was a silent auction at the Bulldog Bash, an annual Schurz Alumni Association fundraising event.

Born in Puerto Rico, Oquendo attended Schurz High School in Chicago. A multi-time Golden Gloves champ, Oquendo went on to a pro boxing career. In 45 pro fights he went 37–8, with 24 knockout wins.

As impressive as his boxing career was, his work in the community is even more admirable. Raised in Chicago’s Lathrop Homes housing projects, Oquendo defeated the odds and believes in giving back. He opened Fres Oquendo Boxing Academy, a nonprofit organization to teach boxing and life skills to youngsters.

For two hours, Oquendo regaled Jodie, John St. Augustine (another Schurz alum) and myself with tales of his career and life. Oquendo’s enthusiasm and positive attitude were inspiring.

The three Schurz alum also made plans for future events to raise funds and awareness for their former high school. The Alumni Association is always looking to help students with various needs.

Our lunch was at LaVilla Restaurant on the Northside of Chicago. We all enjoyed our meals, which were so big, we all needed leftover containers. My calamari linguini was just as good the next day!

Although I am not an alum of Schurz, it was interesting to hear the old memories and future plans. They even made me an honorary Bulldog.
